Pre-Order Facility Comes To Smashwords.com

(credit: Mark Coker Smashwords.com)

The buzz in my office this month is all about the new Pre-Order facility rolled out at Smashwords.com which is fantastic!

How many times have you started a new project, and wished you could upload it and get readers hooked prior to completing your book?

Now you can upload a book to Smashwords and they will place it in the Pre-Order Catalog, and visitors to the website can browse through your sample and pre-order their copy.

How It Works:

  1. Smashwords distributes a book to Apple, Barnes & Noble and Kobo in advance of the official onsale date.
  2. During the preorder period, customers place advance orders.
  3. These advance orders accumulate in the days and weeks prior to the official onsale date and then credit all at once on the date of release, which causes the title to spike in the retailer's bestseller lists.
  4. One drawback - make sure you can commit to publishing the final work on the date agreed in your pre-order page. As customers will be waiting for the release date, it does not bode well to fail to deliver the finished work on time.
  5. The book should be complete and either a final or a near-final draft, and not a work in progress.  The file you upload will be used to generate a sample of the start of the book which retailer customers will download and read.

I was overjoyed when this new element was added to Smashwords as the similar Apple ITunes Preview facility works so well. With a Smashwords facility too, there must be some rub off on sales.

In fact, if you capitalise on this facility correctly you can quickly build a following.

New Data Reveals Trends In Ebook Sales at Smashwords.com

(Credit: Mark Coker Smashwords.com)

As the Indie Publishing bandwagon rolls on, Mark Coker, CEO at Smashwords.com has investigated trends in eBook sales which show Indie Author earning potential when linked to price point.

The investigation showed an increase on last year's premium price point -( $2.99) to the much heralded $3.99. Some of the trends highlighted in the photo above illustrate in simple terms the growth of eBooks as a medium, and the popularity of certain price points with customers.

Without drilling down further into the data it is not possible to establish which price points and genres (fiction or non-fiction for example) perform the best.

What we can learn from this is the length of the book and the correct price of the product can net you the right profit. Which is what it's all about for most Authors. I say most Authors because some choose not to focus on money.

Smashwords.com CEO Mark Coker Interview - TeleRead

Mark Coker:

When we launched Smashwords in early 2008, our platform made it easy to publish and sell an eBook in our own store. We never planned to become a distributor.

In early 2009, however, I had an epiphany. Our small store was an island. Readers were going to bookstores to find their next read, so we needed to get our books into the major online eBook stores.

I studied the landscape and was impressed by the example of Ingram, which was the leading distributor of print books to retailers.

By efficiently managing the distribution and fulfillment logistics for print books, they were offering an incredibly valuable service to publishers, retailers and readers alike.

So I got the crazy idea to make Smashwords the Ingram of self-published ebooks. It was clear at the time that self-published eBook authors were unable to reach the major retailers. Only Amazon had a viable platform for indies.

By the end of 2009, we signed our first distribution deals with Barnes & Noble, Sony and Kobo. In early 2010, we became one of Apple’s first authorized aggregators.
Today, over 90% of our sales come from our distribution network, and it’s where we’ve placed 95% of our development effort over the last four years.....
