EXCLUSIVE EXTRACT - 'THE WEDNESDAY WIFE'

When the traffic light changed to green he sped forward and hoped he’d make his flight 

in time. Within a few minutes he was forced to slam this foot on the brakes as the vehicles up ahead growled to a halt. The second set of traffic lights were now fixed on red. The long line of vehicles behind him sounded their horns in frustration at the continued delays. 

His flight would have boarded by now. He was out of time. He resigned himself to wait for the later flight. In the rear view mirror he noted the evening light had begun to fade.  To the right of his vehicle he saw two gaps in the traffic as the its lane swirled in the opposite direction. He spun the car around and slipped into one of the gaps, to the hail of angry drivers who sounded their horns angrily. 

Charles pushed the button to close the blacked-out windows while the car idled in its lane. He would drive back a hundred yards to a Motel he had passed earlier and would spend the night there.

Finkel sat on the chair in the kitchen and read through her notes on the Kershenbaum investigation. Nick fussed over a pan of king prawns while he poured white wine into an accompanying pan of sauce and stirred the contents together. The aroma of rosemary filled the kitchen, and Finkel felt her pulse begin to recover from her ordeal, and her body transform back into a relaxed state.

“I’m going to see Doctor Petersham tomorrow about the new medication.” Nick turned to look at Finkel as she worked at the kitchen table. 

“I’ve heard that name before.” She ran through the case files for the investigation and pulled out the report. “Is he based at the hospital in Knightsbridge?” Finkel turned to face him. 

“She is based there. Why? Something I should know?” Finkel stood to reach into the pan on the heat and taste the sauce. Nick circled her waist with his arm, then kissed her. 

“Doctor Petersham also treated Martin Kershenbaum. Prescribed valium for him. How long have you been seeing her?” Nick realised he had caught himself in a lie. Finkel saw the change in his posture and steadied herself against the cabinets to his left.

“I was referred to her by the physician in Washington DC. The new medication isn’t working anymore. The migraines are back with a vengeance. I almost felt blind this morning at my office.” Finkel put down the spoon and embraced him. 

“At least you’ve told me instead of trying to keep it to yourself.” He rested his chin in the crease between her neck and her breast and inhaled. Her perfume was intoxicating, and it gave him a rise in his groin which he enjoyed.

“I hope she can give me something which works for a long time. The last one has lasted almost a year. I thought I was done with experimentation now.” Finkel considered his theory and it was sound.

“I’m starving. When can we eat?” Nick pulled her close and kissed her neck, his wet tongue against her warm flesh.
